The proposed name change of the school from the North Carolina School of the Arts to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (Senate Bill 2015) was approved by the House on July 9 and now must be signed into law by Governor Easely. If signed, the bill will take effect August 1.
The proposed name change may have unanimous support in the Board of Governors, but it doesn't on campus. An admittedly unscientific yet telling survey of students taken Friday afternoon shows that over 50% of the students currently attending NCSA do not approve of the pending name change.
The Board of Trustees last week approved a resolution to change the name of the School of the Arts by adding "University" to the beginning, making it "The University of North Carolina School of the Arts." The resolution is pending approval by the UNC Board of Governors and the NC General Assembly.
