The Dec. 15 issue of New York Magazine lists SHOTGUN STORIES in The Top Ten Films in The Best in Culture in 2008.

David Edelstein says: “Few saw Jeff Nichols’ mournful tragedy (starring Michael Shannon) in which two sets of Arkansas brothers who share a father begin a deadly feud. It’s set against a landscape of isolated farms and dilapidated main streets, and the rhythms are languid. But the lines that pop out of these stuporous characters’ mouths have the bitter tang of real life. The movie makes you empathize with the rage that drives these men to violence – but also shows how manly action weakens them, wipes out their individuality, and turns them into automatons.”

New York Magazine also named UNCSA School of Filmmaking alumnus Jody Hill's THE FOOT FIST WAY to its "Year in Superlatives" as the "Best Blessedly Apatow-Free Comedy." The magazine said: “This year’s barrage of overly hyped bro comedies from Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen reminded us that the best laugh is the one you don’t see coming – a quality nailed in Jody Hill’s redneck Tae Kwon Do flick. Presiding over a strip-mall dojo, (UNCSA School of Filmmaking alumnus) Danny McBride’s Ricky Gervais-meets-Barney Fife lug-head was an underdog knockout.”

THE FOOT FIST WAY was written by UNCSA film alumni Hill, McBride, and Ben Best. Hill directed and also acted in the film, as well as Best.
